Azerbaijan Discloses High-Risk Mine Zones in Newly Liberated Territories

BAKU: Azerbaijan has identified high-risk mine areas encompassing approximately 1.1 million hectares in territories recently liberated from occupation, highlighting ongoing challenges in these regions.

According to Trend News Agency, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) Bahruz Mammadov detailed the current situation at today’s session of the Defence, Security and Counter-Corruption Committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament. Mammadov emphasized that no part of the liberated areas is free from the threat of mines. Despite ongoing demining operations that have spanned four years and cleared about 166,000 hectares, only 14.2 percent of the total hazardous area has been rendered safe.

The extensive presence of mines poses significant risks to the resettlement and reconstruction efforts in these zones. The government continues to prioritize demining as a critical step towards safely restoring and repopulating the liberated territories.
