Azerbaijan Expands Green Energy Capacity with New Hydropower Plants in Lachin District

BAKU: Construction of hydropower plants (HPPs) in Azerbaijan’s Lachin district continues to advance, contributing significantly to the nation’s green energy goals, as stated by Tofig Islamov, the acting executive director of the Restoration, Construction, and Management Service in the Lachin district during a panel discussion at the Caspian Construction Week in Baku.

According to Trend News Agency, Islamov highlighted that the construction of HPPs aligns with Azerbaijan’s green energy strategy, which has already led to the establishment of facilities in 11 locations within the district. These plants collectively produce over 80 million kilowatt-hours of green energy. The environmental benefits from these developments are substantial, saving more than 20 million cubic meters of natural gas and preventing the release of approximately 32,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Islamov further explained that the district’s approach to construction and restoration is heavily influenced by the COP29 envir
onmental protection plan, which encourages the use of alternative energy sources. “Solar panels have been installed on the rooftops of buildings, and hybrid solar lamps provide urban lighting. In 24 private houses, solar panels have been set up to ensure stable electricity supply, and nine private homes are connected to solar collectors. All residential buildings, as well as two schools and administrative buildings in Zabukh and Sus villages, are equipped with solar batteries,” he added.

The Caspian Construction Week, which is taking place from October 15 through 17 at the Baku Expo Center, serves as a significant regional event in the construction industry, drawing more than 380 companies from 22 countries to participate in its exhibitions.
