“The Conference of the Parties (COP) comes at a time when we have learned that 2023 is the hottest year on record, and we are witnessing countries all over the world facing the effects of climate change,” State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany Jennifer Morgan said during her meeting with journalists, APA reports.

The German official noted that countries are also feeling the economic consequences and losses of climate change. “For example, China lost 59 billion dollars during the first nine months of 2023. WHO warns about the direct and serious effects of climate change on health and healthcare. Azerbaijan is also exposed to the consequences of climate change, people are feeling the consequences of climate change, especially in the area of water resources. Additionally, landslides, drought or excessive rainfall are also recorded in this region, and an increase in air temperature is felt. We are now in a situation where we have no more time
to lose. At the same time, the interesting point is that Azerbaijan, once a country that first produced large volumes of oil, is now turning into a country that is working on moving away from fossil fuels and is rapidly moving towards renewable energy. In this case, Azerbaijan is a good country to host COP29. We also see interest in the energy transition from the government of Azerbaijan,” she noted.
