Baku: President Ilham Aliyev has signed an Order on measures related to the accession of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this move signifies Azerbaijan’s commitment to eliminating the trade of conflict diamonds. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is an international initiative aimed at preventing the flow of conflict diamonds, which have been used to finance armed conflicts. By joining the scheme, Azerbaijan aligns itself with international efforts to ensure that diamond trade does not contribute to human rights violations.

The Kimberley Process, established in 2003, requires member countries to implement controls on diamond production and trade. Azerbaijan’s accession to the scheme is expected to enhance transparency and credibility in its diamond industry. The country joins a coalition of governments, industry leaders, and civil society organizations dedicated to ensuring that diamond purchases do not fund violence.

This step is part of Azerbaijan’s broader strategy to integrate with global economic frameworks and promote sustainable practices in its industries. As a new participant in the Kimberley Process, Azerbaijan will now work on implementing the necessary regulations and monitoring mechanisms to comply with the certification standards.
