Azerbaijan Reaffirms Commitment to UNESCO’s Global Priorities and African Development


BAKU: Azerbaijan will continue to support UNESCO’s global priorities, focusing on gender equality and African development, as stated by Elman Abdullayev, the country’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, during the 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board.

According to Trend News Agency, Ambassador Abdullayev emphasized Azerbaijan’s dedication to promoting a culture of peace and enhancing intercultural dialogue worldwide. He highlighted the nation’s involvement in initiatives such as the Baku Process and Peaceful Culture Initiatives, which are carried out in collaboration with UNESCO and other member states. “Azerbaijan firmly believes in the power of dialogue, collaboration, and respect among different cultures and religions, rooted in our centuries-long tradition of multiculturalism,” Abdullayev stated.

The ambassador also pointed out Azerbaijan’s active role in supporting UNESCO’s mission through the Azerbaijan UNESCO Trust Fund, which contributes to priority areas globally. Notably, Abdullay
ev underscored Azerbaijan’s advocacy for the Priority Africa Initiative and its efforts to preserve Africa’s cultural and natural heritage. He referenced a recent contribution of $100,000 by the Azerbaijani government to the Africa World Heritage Fund as a testament to their ongoing commitment to the continent’s development.

Further, Abdullayev remarked on Azerbaijan’s focus on capacity-building initiatives within Africa. The country’s National Commission has organized training programs for representatives from over 20 African nations, and supported Regional Meetings of African National Commissions for UNESCO in Ghana and Angola.

Highlighting the importance of education, Abdullayev praised UNESCO’s contributions to STEM training in Africa and signaled Azerbaijan’s eagerness to support enhanced STEM education initiatives in Africa moving forward. “We recognize the transformative potential of STEM education in driving economic growth, social progress, and sustainable development, particularly in addressing Af
rica’s unique challenges,” he commented.

In his concluding remarks, the ambassador reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to working closely with UNESCO and other Member States to advance these vital initiatives and strengthen global cooperation.
