Azerbaijan Rejects European Parliament’s Resolution on Human Rights

Baku:The Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan has firmly rejected a resolution adopted by the European Parliament regarding human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan, describing it as biased and based on false information.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Azerbaijani parliament views this resolution, passed on October 8, 2026, as part of a confrontational political stance by the European Parliament, which has intensified since the Second Karabakh War. The Milli Majlis accuses the European Parliament of attempting to exert political pressure and failing to recognize the new geopolitical realities in the South Caucasus following Azerbaijan's victory.

The Azerbaijani parliament expressed concern over the European Parliament's attempts to act as a supranational authority dictating the powers of Azerbaijan's sovereign institutions. Such actions raise questions about the objectivity of the European Parliament's approach and its willingness to engage with Azerbaijan on equal terms and with mutual respect.

Azerbaijan also pointed to underlying sentiments of Azerbaijanophobia, Turkophobia, and Islamophobia within the European Parliament, suggesting that some members represent lobbying groups rather than European voters, which could impact the European Union's policies in the South Caucasus.

The Milli Majlis criticized the European Parliament for its own internal issues, including corruption investigations and undue political influence. They questioned how such an institution could credibly make political and moral allegations against other states without first addressing its own transparency and integrity issues.

Furthermore, the Azerbaijani parliament highlighted the European Parliament's inconsistent approach to human rights, noting problems within European countries themselves, such as police violence and restrictions on peaceful assembly. They urged the European Parliament to focus on these issues within its member states.

Azerbaijan expressed concern that the resolution was adopted during ongoing peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and mutual trust. The resolution, according to Azerbaijan, complicates interstate relations and efforts toward regional stability.

The Milli Majlis reiterated Azerbaijan's commitment to human rights, rule of law, and democratic development, while criticizing the European Parliament for overlooking the plight of Azerbaijani refugees displaced by Armenian occupation.

In conclusion, the Azerbaijani parliament called on the European Parliament to abandon its confrontational rhetoric and to respect Azerbaijan's sovereignty and path toward democratic development.
