Azerbaijan Sets Ambitious Goal to Boost Cargo Transportation to 30 Million Tons by 2030

BAKU: Azerbaijan has announced a strategic plan to significantly enhance its cargo transportation capacity, aiming to achieve a volume of 30 million tons per year by the end of 2030. Anar Hasanov, Chairman of the Board of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce (AHK Azerbaijan), revealed these plans during an information event focused on “Innovations in Railroad Technology in Azerbaijan: Partnerships and Opportunities for German Companies.”

According to Trend News Agency, Hasanov highlighted the progress already made in Azerbaijan’s railway sector, noting an increase in the share of railway transport in the country’s GDP from 5.4 percent to seven percent this year. He emphasized the importance of railways as an environmentally friendly mode of transport, a factor that gains prominence ahead of COP29, where sustainable development will be a key topic of discussion. Azerbaijan’s strategic geographic location positions it as a crucial hub within global transport corridors, linking the North-South and East-We
st routes.

Hasanov also reported that Azerbaijan managed to handle approximately 18-19 million tons of cargo last year, setting a record performance in the sector. The goal now is to nearly double this figure by 2030. The event, organized as part of a business trip for a delegation of German entrepreneurs led by AHK Azerbaijan, is scheduled to take place from October 21-25, 2024.
