Azerbaijan State Security Service Targets Alleged Coup Plotters in High-Profile Investigation

Baku: Investigative measures are underway in Azerbaijan following a statement from the State Security Service regarding criminal acts against state power. The agency's efforts are focused on preventing activities by foreign special service agencies that threaten Azerbaijan's security and national interests.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, suspicions have emerged regarding several Azerbaijani nationals, including Mehdiyev Ramiz Anvar oglu, Abbasov Abbas Aydin oglu, and Karimli Ali Amirhuseyn oglu. These individuals, along with others, are accused of attempting to forcibly seize state power and alter the constitutional state structure. They are purportedly linked to an organization named the 'Union of Russian Azerbaijani Organizations,' also known as the 'Union of Billionaires,' allegedly created by foreign entities to meddle in Azerbaijan's political processes.

The indictment alleges that the accused, as co-founders and leaders of the organization, sought foreign assistance to orchestrate mass riots and disrupt public order to achieve their goals. In 2013, they allegedly used financial resources and organizational support from foreign agencies to incite unrest during the presidential elections. The indictment also claims that they aimed to use Azerbaijani nationals working abroad to rally support for their cause within Azerbaijan.

Further revelations indicate that the 'National Council of Democratic Forces,' which included some of the accused, sought foreign state support to pressure the Azerbaijani government to implement certain reforms. Ganimat Zayidov is accused of negotiating with foreign agencies on behalf of Ali Karimli to secure their backing in exchange for promising to align Azerbaijan's strategic interests with the foreign state.

The investigation also highlights events from July 2020, where Ali Karimli allegedly instructed party members to exploit a public march in Baku to seize government buildings. Additionally, Ramiz Mehdiyev is accused of drafting secret plans to restructure the state administration and sharing them with foreign agencies, thereby committing treason.

The ongoing investigation has led to the indictment of several individuals, including Abbas Abbasov, Ali Karimli, Fuad Gahramanli, Mammad Ibrahim, and Ganimat Zayidov, under various articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The authorities have declared Abbasov, Gahramanli, and Zayidov wanted, as they are believed to be outside Azerbaijan, evading the investigation.

The case continues to unfold as the State Security Service persists in its efforts to uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.
