Azerbaijan Welcomes First Families Back to Khankendi After 35 Years

Khankendi: On January 21, the first group of residents was welcomed back to the city of Khankendi, marking a significant milestone in Azerbaijan's resettlement efforts.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Public Relations Department of the Restoration, Construction and Management Service in the city of Khankendi and the Aghdara and Khojaly districts reported that 36 families, comprising 162 people, have returned to their native homeland. These families, who were originally from Khankendi, had been temporarily relocated to various regions across the country.

The return of these families, after being displaced for 35 years, was celebrated with the playing of the National Anthem and a tribute to the martyrs. Deputy Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the city of Khankendi, Sabuhi Gahramanov, handed over the keys to their new apartments. Gahramanov highlighted the extensive restoration and reconstruction efforts underway in the liberated territories under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The aim is to revitalize these areas, with new residential spaces and the restoration of essential infrastructure including roads, schools, healthcare, and cultural institutions.

The return is part of the 'Great Return' state program, which focuses on the phased repatriation of internally displaced persons to their ancestral lands. The state is committed to ensuring safe and dignified living conditions while fostering sustainable economic and social development in the region. Gahramanov congratulated the families on their homecoming.

Residents expressed their joy and gratitude during the event. Kamran Nasirov, a martyr's father, spoke about the significance of the moment, while Nadir Rashidov expressed his long-awaited return and paid homage to those who made it possible. ANAMA specialists advised residents on observing safety protocols.

The resettlement marks an important step in restoring life in Khankendi. The city had been under occupation since 1991, until Azerbaijani forces regained control during an operation in September 2023. President Ilham Aliyev symbolically raised the State Flag of Azerbaijan in Khankendi on October 15, 2023. The restoration and reconstruction in the city continue at a swift pace, with the state program ensuring that apartments are fully renovated and equipped with necessary utilities and infrastructure. The phased resettlement under the 'Great Return' program will continue to bring more families back to Khankendi.
