Baku: Citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan have been repatriated from Syria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA. As a result of phased and coordinated measures taken by the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the "Rules for Repatriation and Rehabilitation of Minor Citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan Living in Difficult Conditions in a Foreign Country" approved by Decree No. 2336 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated October 28, 2023, a total of 5 Azerbaijani citizens - including 2 women and 3 children - were repatriated to the country from the conflict zone in the Syrian Arab Republic via the Republic of Trkiye on April 21, 2026.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, first, the location, identity, and citizenship of the repatriates were determined, after which their transfer to the territory of the Republic of Trkiye was organized. Representatives of the relevant state bodies responsible for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Iraq and Syria were dispatched to Istanbul, Republic of Trkiye, and initial medical and psychological examinations of the repatriates were ensured.
Through coordination carried out by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Trkiye and the Consulate General in Istanbul, the citizens were provided with return certificates to the Republic of Azerbaijan and flight tickets. On April 21, 2026, the repatriation of the aforementioned citizens to Azerbaijan was carried out with the accompaniment of the delegation.
Appropriate measures are envisaged to ensure the social rehabilitation and reintegration of the repatriates into society. Necessary measures will continue to be taken to repatriate citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan who have become victims of armed conflicts in foreign countries.
