Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev Discusses Military Successes and Political Stance in Interview

BAKU: In an extensive interview with Dmitry Kiselev, Director General of the Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev detailed the military actions and political perspectives surrounding the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, also known as the Second Karabakh War, which concluded with Azerbaijan reclaiming territories held by Armenian forces for nearly three decades. According to Trend News Agency, President Aliyev emphasized the Azerbaijani military's achievements during the 44-day conflict that began on September 27, 2020, following what he described as provocations by Armenian forces. The president outlined the significant territorial gains and the strategic importance of the areas liberated, including the city of Jabrayil and key positions across the Murovdag mountain range. Aliyev reported Azerbaijani civilian casualties and property damage resulting from the conflict, condemning continued artillery attacks from Armenia, including strikes on the city of Ganja post-ce asefire, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. Aliyev firmly denied allegations of foreign mercenaries supporting the Azerbaijani military efforts, attributing the success to the well-equipped and capable Azerbaijani forces, which he noted could be expanded if necessary. The president dismissed the need for foreign military involvement, reinforcing Azerbaijan's position against international terrorism. Discussing the Moscow agreements, Aliyev criticized the current Armenian government for discarding previously made progress in peace negotiations under former administrations. He outlined the phased liberation of Azerbaijani districts and the return of displaced persons as central to the agreement. He reiterated Azerbaijan's commitment to the territorial integrity of Nagorno-Karabakh and dismissed any possibility of its independence, suggesting that future peaceful coexistence could emulate the integration seen in other multi-ethnic regions of Azerbaijan.
