Azerbaijan’s Boyukshor floating solar power plant starts operation (Exclusive)

The Boyukshor floating solar power plant, unique for Azerbaijan with a capacity of 100 kW, has begun operation, an informed source told Trend.

“Spanish Gamma Solutions, funded by a grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has constructed a 100 kW photovoltaic system on Boyukshor Lake near Baku. The project operates on the principle of solar panels, converting sunlight into electrical energy using a DC photovoltaic generator,” explained the source.

The initiative forms part of ADB’s regional Floating Solar Energy Development program, encompassing Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan.

Gamma Solutions, operating in approximately 20 countries, boasts a portfolio comprising over 50 renewable energy projects, including photovoltaic and wind farms worldwide.

“This pioneering project in Azerbaijan features 100 kW of AC power, with 95 kW generated directly from the floating part of the station and 5 kW from the land-based section,” added the source.

Currently, renewable energy sources (including hydropower
) constitute 15 percent of Azerbaijan’s total energy balance.

Azerbaijan aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy capacity to 30-33 percent by 2030.
