Baku: Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, is preparing to host the first-ever meeting of environment ministers from the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) on November 20, as reported by Trend News Agency. This event marks a significant step in regional cooperation on environmental issues among Turkic-speaking countries. According to Trend News Agency, the gathering in Baku will bring together the top environmental officials from the OTS member nations to discuss key issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and environmental protection. The meeting is set against the backdrop of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will also take place in Azerbaijan this November. The decision to hold COP29 in Baku was made during the plenary meeting of COP28 in Dubai last year. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, aims to prevent hazardous human impacts on the climate syst em. The conference, known as COP, serves as the principal governing body for international climate policy and is attended annually by the parties to the convention unless decided otherwise. The first COP meeting occurred in Berlin, Germany, in March 1995. The upcoming gathering in Baku not only underscores Azerbaijan's growing role in global environmental discussions but also highlights the importance of regional collaborations in tackling pressing climate issues. Baku is expected to host approximately 70-80,000 foreign guests during the two-week span of COP29, turning the city into a focal point for global environmental diplomacy.
