Azerbaijan’s Cybersecurity Agency Warns of Cyberattack Risks on Refrigeration Equipment

Baku:The National Cybersecurity Agency (NCA) has issued a warning about the risks of cyberattacks targeting refrigeration equipment, as reported by APA-Economics.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, cyberattacks have recently targeted the control systems of refrigeration and freezing equipment in several European countries. On October 11, 2026, hundreds of supermarkets in France were affected, and similar incidents were reported on November 2 in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Estonia. These attacks are not limited to the retail sector, as there have been reports of interference with refrigeration equipment at a blood bank in France, posing risks to the healthcare sector.

During these cyberattacks, criminals gain unauthorized access to control systems, switching equipment to defrost mode or raising temperatures to as high as 50°C. This interference, occurring mainly at night, often remains undetected until morning, leading to unusable stored products. The main targets are control interfaces accessible via the internet, including the Danfoss AK-SM 800 and AK-SC 355 models, which are unsupported by the manufacturer, as well as AK-SM 800A controllers with outdated software, and Copeland XWEB and Dixell XWEB systems. Preliminary assessments point to unchanged default login credentials and outdated software as key vulnerabilities.

The consequences of such interference go beyond financial losses, potentially causing equipment failure, fire risks, and violations of storage conditions for medicines and medical products. The NCA urges organizations to maintain vigilance against cyberattack risks, particularly those targeting automated control systems in refrigeration.
