Baku: Azerbaijan is set to enhance its urea production capacity through SOCAR’s Carbamide Plant, targeting a total output of 660,000 tons this year. Shohrat Mirzayev, head of the plant’s production department, shared this during a media tour commemorating the 150th anniversary of the National Press.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, last year the plant produced 652,000 tons of urea, and this year the aim is to surpass this with a projected output of over 660,000 tons. The plant’s production is sufficient to meet the domestic market’s demand, with 20-30% consumed locally and the rest exported.

Mirzayev highlighted that urea from the plant is exported to several regions, including Georgia, Trkiye, and various Black Sea and European countries, as well as North and South America. The SOCAR Carbamide Plant, which began operations in 2019, was initially funded by the Azerbaijani state budget, supplemented by international loans totaling 500 million euros.

The plant has a production capacity of 650-660 thousand tons annually, utilizing 435 million cubic meters of natural gas. It has eliminated the need for Azerbaijan to import nitrogen fertilizers, allowing the country to save foreign currency and enhance non-oil export revenues.
