BCHR asks the country’s leadership to pardon 57 convicts

The Baku Human Rights Club (BCHR) appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Chairman of the Pardon Commission Samir Nuriyev in connection with the expected act of pardon on the occasion of Independence Day – May 28. Hhuman rights activists are asking to release 57 convicted persons from prison, the head of the BCHR Rasul Jafarov told Turan.

Among them, a veteran of the first Karabakh war, Saleh Rustamov, citizens convicted in the “Naradaran” and “Ganja” cases, members of the former OPON (convicted in the case of the 1995 OPON rebellion), a number of members of political parties.

Jafarov explained not being included in the list of defendants in the “Terter case” because the cases of those convicted of these events are currently being reviewed anew and they have a chance of receiving full rehabilitation.

The authors of the appeal believe that the pardon will allow not only the convicts to be released from prison, but will bring relief and joy to their relatives. In addition, this will contribute to the creation of a positive and conciliatory atmosphere in society.
