On December 9 and 10, U.S. President Joe Biden will host a virtual Summit for Democracy, which will bring together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to “set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today through collective action”, as Administration officials put it.

The Summit will feature remarks from President Biden and other senior U.S. Government officials, plenary sessions with Heads of State, and thematic sessions with governmental and non-governmental leaders, Turan’s Washington correspondent was told by Administration officials.

“We expect this event to provide leaders a forum to discuss current challenges and opportunities, and to serve as a platform to announce new commitments, reforms, and initiatives,”  a State Department spokesperson said on background when Turan reached out for comment.

In advance of the virtual Summit, the U.S. — represented by Departments and agencies across the government — will join a wide spectrum of advocates,  journalists, private sector, and members of civil society from around the world, as well as lawmakers and local government officials, in hosting official side events about democratic renewal, the State Department announced on Wednesday.

The US is “pleased to highlight 19 events that will catalyze action across the Summit pillars: strengthening democracy and defending against authoritarianism, fighting corruption, and promoting respect for human rights.”
