Rome:Binance announced on Saturday that it has managed to cover 90% of the approximately $6.3 billion in token assets stolen from its hot wallets in what has been described as a record-breaking crypto theft.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the FBI disclosed late Saturday that it has determined North Korea was responsible for the theft.
Binance stated that it will continue to acquire the remaining token assets through market and over-the-counter channels until it has covered 100% of all affected tokens. The company assured that all BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, XRP, USD1, RLUSD, and ZEC tokens are backed 100%.
The exchange highlighted that the outstanding 10% consists of less liquid tokens outside its top 10, which may take longer to acquire in the required amounts. To replenish the assets, Binance is utilizing its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU), a portion of its Futures insurance fund, and its corporate treasury.
Binance reiterated its commitment to fully cover the financial impact of the stolen funds. The company emphasized that this commitment will be demonstrated through measurable progress, transparent reporting, and concrete actions. The next step for Binance is to resume withdrawal services for users by Sunday, following necessary security checks, as the investigation into the attack continues.
