BRICS Identified as Crucial in Climate Change Efforts, Asserts Brazil’s President

KAZAN: BRICS is positioned as a pivotal actor in the global battle against climate change, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared during the BRICS summit in Kazan, as reported by Trend News Agency. President Lula emphasized the significant role BRICS nations can play in addressing environmental challenges and called for greater accountability from wealthier countries.

According to Trend News Agency, President Lula highlighted the disproportionate responsibility of affluent nations, whose extensive histories of emissions have substantially contributed to the current climate crisis. He urged these countries to exceed their longstanding but unmet financial pledge of $100 billion annually for climate initiatives and advocated for enhanced monitoring of international commitments. Stressing the urgency underscored by scientific findings, he remarked, “We have only one planet, and its future depends on collective action.”

President Lula also underscored the need for emerging economies to contribute
to the goal of restricting global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In anticipation of the upcoming COP30 climate conference in Belém, he expressed Brazil’s intent to demonstrate that higher ambitions in Nationally Determined Contributions can coexist with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. Furthermore, he reiterated Brazil’s commitment, during its BRICS presidency, to promote a multipolar world and strive for more balanced international relations.
