Baku: The British Ambassador has expressed optimism that the signing of a peace agreement will significantly enhance international investors’ confidence in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the importance of the agreement for regional economic integration.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the ambassador, speaking at the 3rd National Urban Forum of Azerbaijan, highlighted the relevance of the forum’s theme, ‘Climate Resilient and Healthy Cities.’ He noted that British companies are already contributing to the transformation of Shusha into a smart and livable city, aligning with the interests of both the UK Government and British enterprises.
The ambassador pointed out that while the energy sector has historically been a focal point of UK-Azerbaijan relations, there is now considerable potential for British investment in other sectors such as clean energy, infrastructure, security, healthcare, and education. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the diversification of Azerbaijan’s economy beyond oil.
In terms of regional economic integration, the ambassador remarked that the initialing of the peace agreement in Washington had sent a strong signal to international investors about the positive changes occurring in the region. He emphasized that the official signing of the agreement would further bolster international confidence and enhance connectivity through significant infrastructure projects like the road and railway constructions through Horadiz and Eastern Zangezur towards Nakhchivan.
British companies are already actively participating in the development of Azerbaijan’s liberated territories. Noteworthy projects include BP’s solar energy initiative in Jabrayil, Chapman Taylor’s involvement in urban planning, and landmine clearance operations conducted by several British firms. Additionally, Zaha Hadid Architects is exploring new opportunities in the region, underscoring the UK’s genuine partnership in Azerbaijan’s reconstruction efforts.
The ambassador also noted the importance of advancing discussions to operationalize the Zangezur Corridor and other transport routes, highlighting the need for the peace agreement’s progression from initialing to signing to build international confidence. He stressed that forums such as the National Urban Forum provide valuable platforms for showcasing the region’s progress to international representatives and companies.
In a lighter note, the ambassador, a football enthusiast, shared his excitement about the upcoming Champions League matches between ‘Qarabag’ FK and British clubs, expressing his divided support for both teams as the British Ambassador to Azerbaijan.
