Baku: On March 17, the grand opening of the 15th-century national monument, Bukhara caravanserai, was celebrated in Icherisheher following extensive restoration and conservation efforts. The event also marked the introduction of the "BukharArt" art space, which will now operate within the historic site. Attendees included prominent figures such as Anar Alakbarov, Director of the Heydar Aliyev Center, Alena Aliyeva, Deputy Minister of Culture Saadat Yusifova, Rufat Mahmud, Chairman of the Board of the 'Icherisheher' State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration, alongside cultural figures and public representatives.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Bukhara caravanserai, originally built as a haven for Central Asian merchants, has been restored to its former glory through a significant project under the directive of President Ilham Aliyev. The restoration preserved both the architectural and engineering features of the monument.
Rufat Mahmud, addressing the event, emphasized the restoration's importance in preserving historical heritage for future generatio
ns. He noted that the 'BukharArt' art space would enhance Icherisheher's cultural life. Restorer Erich Pumer highlighted the sensitivity of the renovation process, which integrated modern engineering solutions to uphold the structure's durability while safeguarding its original architectural style.
Bahrom Ashrafkhanov, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Azerbaijan, noted the historical significance of the Bukhara caravanserai as a hub of trade and cultural exchange between diverse regions, affirming its historical ties between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Attendees were also given the opportunity to tour the monument.
The restoration and conservation, spanning 3.5 years, were executed by the Austrian company 'Atelier Erich Pummer GmbH,' known for its international expertise, upon the order of the 'Icherisheher' State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration.
The Bukhara caravanserai has been transformed into a vibrant space for local artisans, featuring 18 rooms dedicated to various artistic fields. Artisans will create, demonstrate, and sell their handicrafts daily. 'BukharArt' will serve as an interactive hub for local and international visitors, offering master classes on Azerbaijani folk art, including traditional crafts such as weaving, sculpture, leatherworking, painting, and more.
With its distinctive architectural style, 'BukharArt' aims to become a cultural attraction for residents and visitors of the capital.
