The Caspian salmon form several populations associated with the basins of some rivers flowing into the Caspian (Kura, Terek, Samur, Lankaran, Astara, Sefidrud, etc.).

Salmon breed in rivers (mainly in the Kura), larvae and young fish spend one and a half to two years in fresh river water and then descend to sea pastures.

After the Kura, Aras and other rivers had been dammed, salmon catches went down.

The spawning migration of the salmon upstream in the Kura River takes place from October through March at a water temperature of 8.2 to 12.8 °C.

The Caspian salmon occupies a modest place in overall fish catches in the Caspian basin, but it has equals in terms of commercial value.
