Brussels: Former President of the European Council Charles Michel expressed optimism about the impact of a peace agreement on the relationship between the European Union and the Caucasus region. 'I remember a few years ago, it was extremely difficult for the leadership in Azerbaijan and in Armenia to have a channel of communication and to have some space to make possible first to understand each other much better. And I've tried to do my best with this so-called Brussels format,' Michel told journalists.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Michel recounted the efforts made in Brussels and elsewhere to provide opportunities for dialogue between the President of Azerbaijan and the Armenian province. Despite the challenges and diverging views, Michel sensed a willingness to progress towards a peace agreement and expressed satisfaction that steps were being made in that direction. He emphasized the importance of consolidating territorial integrity and mutual sovereignty recognition.

Michel also highlighted the significance of connectivity in fostering economic projects and investments, which he believes will enhance predictability and trust in the region. 'I'm happy and pleased that we had some occasions to facilitate those direct talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan. And I hope that in the future, it will be possible to consolidate those advancements,' he added.

Addressing a question on the Zangezur Corridor, Michel stated that the consolidation of stability and a true peace agreement would further enhance relations between the EU, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
