Chinese and British Officials Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Relations in Beijing


BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held discussions with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in Beijing, with both sides emphasizing the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges. The meeting underscored the nations’ roles as permanent members of the UN Security Council and their shared commitment to international order.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Wang Yi emphasized the potential for China and the UK to build a stable and strategic relationship. He highlighted the importance of mutual respect and open cooperation, aligning with the consensus reached by the nations’ leaders. Wang also acknowledged the historical significance and future potential of China-UK relations, noting the British Labour government’s proposal for a long-term partnership.

Wang further asserted that Taiwan and Hong Kong affairs remain China’s internal matters, urging respect for sovereignty and non-interference principles. He called for enhanced dialogue and understanding to f
oster an environment conducive to collaboration. China expressed willingness to restore dialogue mechanisms and pursue cooperation in areas such as trade, finance, green development, and technology.

Lammy reiterated the UK’s commitment to engaging with China, managing differences constructively, and maintaining its longstanding position on Taiwan. He conveyed the UK’s intent to expand dialogue on multiple levels and collaborate on climate change, energy, and trade, aiming for a robust UK-China partnership. Lammy also stressed the need for both countries to uphold free trade and address geopolitical issues through diplomacy.
