Consulates of Russia abroad have suspended the acceptance of documents for biometric passports

Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced on the temporary suspension of the acceptance of documents for biometric passports, APA reports citing Perild.

“For technical reasons, from August 26, 2022, the acceptance of applications for the issuance of passports containing an electronic storage medium (valid for 10 years) is temporarily suspended,” the department’s website says.

Such messages appeared, among other things, on the websites of the Russian embassies in Latvia, Germany and Turkiye.

Citizens of Russia abroad will only be able to obtain a passport, which is issued for five years. It does not have a biometric chip. You can apply for a five-year passport if your current passport has been lost, damaged, or it has run out of blank pages. On the website of the Russian diplomatic mission in Turkiye reportedthat five-year passports will be issued “until the issue of manufacturing passports with an electronic information carrier is settled.”
