COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company Introduces Sustainable Energy Solutions at Baku Stadium

BAKU: The COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company has announced the implementation of sustainable energy solutions at the Baku Stadium, the venue for the upcoming COP29 conference, as part of its commitment to minimize environmental impact and promote sustainability throughout the event. A key component of this initiative is the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as a major power source for the stadium.

According to Trend News Agency, the Operating Company is organizing the COP29 Conference under a sustainability policy that includes seven commitments. The foremost of these is achieving carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and offsetting emissions that cannot be avoided. Additionally, the policy emphasizes promoting sustainable practices, which include reducing single-use plastics, encouraging sustainable transportation, and adopting environmentally conscious procurement methods.

A central initiative aligned with these commi
tments is the utilization of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as an alternative to fossil fuels for powering parts of the conference venue. This initiative aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy consumption during the event.

Hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) is recognized as a low-carbon fuel source. Its emissions are offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed by the biomass used in its production, making it a more sustainable option compared to conventional fossil fuels. HVO usage is also associated with a reduction in harmful pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides, thereby improving air quality in and around the venue. In addition to HVO, renewable energy sources will supply power to other sections of the venue throughout the event.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with SOCAR Green, the COP29 Energy Transition Partner, which has played a crucial role in securing the necessary volumes of HVO to power the stadium. This in
itiative reflects Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and aligns with the country’s broader goal of transitioning to a low-carbon energy future.

The COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company anticipates that this approach will serve as a model for other international events, reinforcing its commitment to hosting a sustainable and carbon-neutral conference.
