COP29 in Azerbaijan to Focus on Global Investment, Technology, and Water Efficiency

BAKU: The upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), set to take place in Azerbaijan this November, will serve as a critical platform for addressing global challenges such as investment, technology distribution, and water use efficiency, according to Nasar Hayat, the acting UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan.

According to Trend News Agency, Hayat emphasized the importance of COP29 in fostering an international consensus on pressing environmental issues. He highlighted that the conference will pay special attention to the efficient use and conservation of water – a vital resource necessary for the survival of millions worldwide. “Water efficiency means producing the same or even more food and other products using less water,” Hayat explained, underscoring the need to rethink how water is used, particularly in agriculture.

The decision to host COP29 in Baku was made during the plenary meeting of COP28 held last December in Dubai. The con
ference is expected to attract 70-80,000 foreign guests, making Baku a global focal point for discussions on climate change for two weeks.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. It currently includes 198 countries committed to this goal. The annual COP meetings, overseen by a secretariat based in Bonn, are the highest legislative body of the convention, with the first meeting held in Berlin in March 1995.
