COP29 Organizing Committee Holds Final Preparations Meeting in Baku.


Baku: The Organizing Committee convened its eighth meeting to finalize preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Samir Nuriyev, Head of the Presidential Administration and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, confirmed that preparations are nearing completion under the guidance of President Ilham Aliyev. He mentioned that President Aliyev recently reviewed the extensive work underway at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Nuriyev highlighted the international recognition of Azerbaijan’s efforts, noting that over 100 heads of state and government, vice presidents, and other senior officials are expected to attend the COP29 World Leaders’ Summit. More than 50,000 participants have registered with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat, with numbers continuing to rise.

Nuriyev recalled President Aliyev’s address at the Pre-COP29 event, emphasizing the critical goal of establis
hing a new climate finance target. He expressed optimism that achieving the “Baku Agreement” would be a landmark accomplishment for the international community. He also stressed the importance of the Transport Plan, designed to ensure smooth transportation during the event.

The committee reviewed various aspects of preparation, including updates at the Baku Olympic Stadium, coordination with state agencies and international partners, and significant interest from foreign media and NGOs. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President-Designate, provided updates on COP29’s progress, including recent sessions with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group.

Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department, addressed media communication strategies and civil society contributions to COP29. Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President, discussed logistical efforts and traffic management at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

er Jeyhun Bayramov focused on important documents to be adopted during COP29, especially those relating to the new climate finance target. Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov detailed advancements in Azerbaijan’s green energy sector and planned events for COP29.

Nigar Arpadarai, MP and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, shared insights on Baku Climate Action Week and related events. Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service, outlined migration management efforts, while Ilgar Musayev, Head of the State Service of Special Communication and Information Security, discussed information security measures.

Leyla Hasanova, COP29 Youth Climate Champion, emphasized youth involvement in climate action. A video showcasing updates on the Baku Olympic Stadium was also presented.

Concluding the meeting, Chairman Nuriyev expressed confidence in achieving historic success at COP29 under President Aliyev’s leadership and issued further instructions for implementing the COP29 Action Plan.
