Cristiano Ronaldo to Retire from International Football After November Matches

Lisbon:Cristiano Ronaldo announced Thursday that he will retire from international football following Portugal's matches in November, concluding a record-breaking international career spanning more than two decades.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the 41-year-old forward stated in an Instagram post that he would "hand back the number 7 shirt" after the upcoming international break. Portugal is set to face Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on November 14 before traveling to Wales three days later.

Ronaldo made his senior international debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003 and has since scored 146 goals in 234 appearances, both of which are records in men's international football. Under his captaincy, Portugal secured its first major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship and went on to win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. Ronaldo also became the first player to score in six editions of the men's World Cup, marking his achievement at the 2026 tournament, although Portugal was eliminated by Spain in the round of 16.

The announcement of his retirement follows a public dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus during the September international window. Ronaldo left the national team camp after being benched against Norway, later apologizing to fans and teammates and accusing the coach of not fulfilling promises regarding his playing time. He mentioned that he remained available for selection post any punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation.

Ronaldo had contemplated retiring after the 2026 World Cup but was convinced to continue by federation president Pedro Proenca. His decision to retire pertains solely to international football, as he continues his club career with Saudi Arabian team Al Nassr.
