Baku: The first gas production as part of the free gas development project in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field block is expected to commence in the first half of 2026.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the information stems from BP’s report on the outcomes of its operations in Azerbaijan for the initial nine months of the current year. The report highlights that following the signing of a new addendum to the existing production sharing agreement (PSA) for ACG concerning free natural gas (FG), an initial production well was planned and safely drilled from the existing West Chirag platform. This well holds significant importance from an evaluation standpoint, as the data obtained will be instrumental in shaping future development plans for the FG reserves in ACG.

In 2025, the drilling operations in the well were successfully completed, granting access to two priority free gas layers located beneath the current oil-producing layers-the shallow Girmakustu Sand (GUK) and the deeper Girmakalti (GA) layer systems. Additionally, high-pressure gas reserves were discovered in the GA layer system, with test operations in this layer scheduled for early 2026.

It is noteworthy that to further the exploration, evaluation, development, and production of FG reserves in the ACG field, a new addendum to the existing PSA for ACG was signed on September 20, 2024. The recoverable FG reserves in the ACG field are estimated to be substantial, reaching up to 4 trillion cubic feet.
