Elchin Mammad complains that the court is delaying the consideration of his appeal

The Baku Court of Appeal returned the complaint of human rights activist Elchin Mammad to the denial of parole , the message of the NGO “Legal Education of the Youth of Sumgayit”, headed by Mammad.

The Court of Appeals motivated the refusal to accept the complaint as a violation of procedural norms by the court of first instance. Red tape by the judiciary has been going on for almost two months. Mammad sees this as a violation of his right of access to a court.

Previously, Mammad was denied a mitigation of punishment after serving 1/3 of his sentence, although he does not have disciplinary sanctions.

* Elchin Mammad, head of the “Legal Education of the Youth of Sumgait” NGO and editor of the “Yukselish Namine” website, was arrested in March 2020. On October 17 of the same year, the Sumgayit city court sentenced him to 4 years in prison under the Articles “theft” and “illegal possession of ammunition and weapons.”

The international organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FIACAT and others condemned Mammad’s arrest. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.
