BAKU: Emissions reduction and energy efficiency have emerged as critical components in the sustainable development of railways, according to Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY). Speaking at the “Sustainable Transport for the Future” event in Baku, Rustamov emphasized the efficiency of rail transport, which contributes to only one percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, positioning it as a more sustainable option compared to other modes of transportation.

According to Trend News Agency, Rustamov highlighted that in Azerbaijan, railway transport is responsible for just 1.12 percent of the nation’s total energy consumption, with greenhouse gas emissions accounting for less than 0.5 percent. He articulated the goal of establishing a carbon-neutral railway system in the country. “In 2023, 100 percent of passenger transportation and 80 percent of freight transportation were carried out using electricity,” Rustamov stated, underscoring the progress towards achieving a sustainable and en
