European Championship’s Azerbaijani chess winner returns home (PHOTO)


BAKU: The first Azerbaijani woman to win a gold medal at the European Individual Chess Championship held on the Greek island of Rhodes, Ulviya Fataliyeva has returned to her homeland, Trend reports.

The sportswoman was welcomed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by representatives of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, the mass media, fans, relatives, and public representatives.

Ulviya Fataliyeva won the continental championship after playing a draw with a representative of Georgia, Nina Batsiashvili, in the 10th round.

After that, the Azerbaijani chess player, who scored 8.5 points, became unattainable to her rivals.

To note, the European Chess Union has been organizing the European Women’s Individual Championship since 2000. Ulviya Fataliyeva went down in history as the first Azerbaijani chess player to win a gold medal in the individual championship of the continent.
