Exhumation of Mass Graves in Azerbaijan Reveals Evidence of Torture

Baku:Remains believed to belong to 253 individuals have been exhumed from 32 mass graves found in recently liberated territories, stated Colonel General Ali Naghiyev, Chief of Azerbaijan's State Security Service, during the Fourth International Conference in Azerbaijan as part of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the State Security Service chief reported that examinations of the human remains indicate the Azerbaijanis were subjected to torture. He emphasized that concealing prisoners and hostages from international organizations and killing them through torture, followed by covering up evidence, are gross violations of international law. Legal assessments of these acts are necessary.

Forensic molecular-genetic examinations have identified 328 individuals who went missing during the First Karabakh War. Of these, the remains of 273 have been returned to their families and buried according to national and religious traditions. Among those buried, 225 were servicemen and 48 civilians, including 15 women and two minors.

These results were achieved through the efforts of President Ilham Aliyev and systematic state-level work, along with contributions from specialists. Each identification provides closure to families, with ongoing support and communication being crucial aspects of this work.
