Expert Claims Western Sanctions and Diplomatic Statements Interfere in Georgian Politics

Tbilisi: An expert has accused Western officials of interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs through sanctions threats and diplomatic statements, asserting their actions are designed to sway the upcoming parliamentary elections in favor of the opposition.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, recent statements from European Union officials about potentially suspending visa-free travel and freezing financial aid are primarily aimed at discrediting the incumbent “Georgian Dream” party. Anjaparidze alleges that these actions are intended to manipulate public opinion and boost opposition support. He further claims that Western diplomatic missions in Georgia are actively involved, with some ambassadors making statements that he believes contravene diplomatic norms.

“The West is explicitly vocal about its preference for the upcoming electoral results in Georgia,” Anjaparidze stated. He criticized the directness of Western officials who have purportedly expressed desires to see a change in the Georgian government
, suggesting such statements amount to overt interference. Moreover, Anjaparidze warned of potential unrest, predicting that the opposition might protest and claim election fraud if they lose, particularly if their actions are not supported by international observers like the OSCE. He emphasized the critical role these observers play in legitimizing or delegitimizing post-election responses.
