First Cadaver Donor Transplant Sparks Surge in Azerbaijan Donor Registrations

Baku: The number of individuals in Azerbaijan willing to become organ donors has surpassed 1,200 following the nation's inaugural deceased-donor organ transplant. This milestone was highlighted by Yegana Abbasova, Chair of the Board of the Ministry of Health's Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, during a roundtable discussion titled 'The first heart transplant in the Caucasus: a historic achievement of Azerbaijan's healthcare and future prospects.'

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Abbasova emphasized the establishment of a legal framework for the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation as a pivotal step. The initiative included the creation of regulations for a unified information database, which now encompasses all hospitals performing transplants and maintains a list of individuals initially awaiting organ donation.
