Baku: The road from the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) to the upcoming WUF14 hinges on the effective local implementation of global housing commitments, according to Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the former Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and former Executive Director of UN-Habitat. During a session held at the Azerbaijan Pavilion, Sharif emphasized the necessity of translating global commitments into local policy and practical action to achieve tangible outcomes.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Sharif articulated the critical role of robust budgets, implementation mechanisms, and investment opportunities in the success of housing policies. She highlighted Malaysia's efforts to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda into national and sub-national policies. This integration first appeared in the country's five-year development plan before being adopted by state and local governments. Sharif stressed the importance of creating a favorable environment for investors and financial institutions to attract greater investment in affordable housing projects.

Sharif also pointed out that the discussions at WUF13 in Baku lay the groundwork for WUF14, emphasizing the need to strengthen practical approaches that transform global commitments into local achievements.
