By the verdict of the Military Court of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR), the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of this region, Ahmed Ahmedov, was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

According to a law enforcement source, Ahmedov was also stripped of his general rank and the Order of Azerbaijan Bayrag (Flag of Azerbaijan). Ahmedov was arrested earlier this year on charges of embezzlement and damage on a particularly large scale.

Ahmedov served as the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for 17 years (from 2000-2017) and was considered one of the most odious officials of the autonomy. His name was featured in scandals involving the persecution of local human rights defenders and journalists.

According to some reports, Ahmedov illegally imprisoned persons who owed money to his brother Avaz Ahmedov. The latter was also arrested and charged with extortion through threats and illegal imprisonment.

In 2016, the head of the Ministry of Security of Nakhchivan, Veli Asgarov, was removed and arrested. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison under Art. “embezzlement or embezzlement on a large scale”, “abuse of office” and “abuse of office”.
