Former Newcastle winger Christian Atsu found dead after Türkiye earthquake

Former Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu died in the devastating earthquake which struck Türkiye earlier this month, it has now been confirmed, according to Sports Mole.

The 31-year-old has been discovered below the rubble of his apartment block in Hatay, which collapsed as a result of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of February 6.

Initial reports erroneously suggested that he had been found alive but his club side, Turkish Super Lig outfit Hatayspor, confirmed that both he and sporting director Taner Savut were still missing.

Agent Nana Sechere said in a statement on Saturday: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

Having begun his career in Portugal with Rio Ave and Porto, Atsu moved to Chelsea in 2013 but failed to make a senior appearance for the Blues, instead spending time out on loan at sides including Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga.

The player then moved to the Magpies on a permanent deal during the summer of 2017 and during his five years in the North East – including a prior year on loan – he made 121 appearances, contributing eight goals.
