Gaval-Azerbaijan’s medieval percussion instrument, preserving ancient traditions of Azerbaijani music

The gaval is an ancient Azerbaijani percussion instrument dating back to the Middle Ages.

Having preserved its original shape throughout the centuries, Gaval has become one of the integral part of Azerbaijani culture, occupying a special place in the country’s musical heritage.

Considered as a membranophone instrument, gaval, however, has certain features of an idiophone instrument, including metal rings and small jingles, which produce a unique sound when shaken.

The first music scores for the instrument were written by the genius Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibayli.

Gaval is also an integral part of the “Mugham trio”, including tar and kamancha, a musical group of instruments essential during the mugham performance.

The instrument can be played with fingers and slapped as well.
