Georgian Parliamentary Elections Poised to Shape Regional Stability and Foreign Relations

Tbilisi: On October 26, Georgia is set to conduct parliamentary elections that are seen as pivotal for the country’s foreign policy and regional stability, particularly concerning its relations with the European Union, Russia, and neighboring Azerbaijan. The elections will decide between the “Georgian Dream” party, advocating for Eurointegration while maintaining ties with Russia, and the “United National Movement” coalition, which favors closer ties with the West and a tougher stance on Russia.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the upcoming elections are crucial not only for Georgia’s internal dynamics but also for its extensive foreign policy implications. The European Union has reportedly exerted significant pressure on Georgia, especially following the recent legislative actions such as the “foreign agents” law and the ban on LGBT propaganda, which have been criticized for moving Georgia away from European integration. This has resulted in the EU freezing financial aid and the U.S. reviewing its coop
eration with Georgia.

The internal legislation in Georgia has sparked controversy and led to increased scrutiny from Western countries. The EU and U.S. have expressed concerns that these laws represent a shift away from democratic values, leading to financial and diplomatic repercussions. In response to these policies, the EU Parliament passed a resolution demanding Georgia to align more closely with EU foreign policy directives, including joining sanctions against Russia.

The situation has broader implications for regional security, particularly for Azerbaijan. Georgia plays a crucial role in the transportation of Azerbaijani oil and gas to international markets through key pipelines and transportation projects. Moreover, the presence of a significant Azerbaijani community in Georgia underscores the interconnectedness of the two nations. Stability in Georgia thus directly impacts Azerbaijan, affecting both countries’ economic and security interests.

Azerbaijan views the stability of Georgia as integral to
regional security and has closely monitored the situation, given the strategic partnerships and investments linking the two countries. The outcome of the Georgian elections could influence not only the bilateral relationships but also the broader geopolitical dynamics in the South Caucasus, especially amidst ongoing normalization efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
