Germany and Azerbaijan to Explore Green Energy Cooperation

Baku:There is significant potential for cooperation between Germany and Azerbaijan in the energy sector, as highlighted by Kristina Haverkamp, Managing Director of the German Energy Agency, during a recent panel discussion at the 'German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026.'

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Haverkamp noted that renewable energy accounts for 60% of electricity generation in Germany. She emphasized that Germany not only produces renewable energy but also has substantial experience in integrating it into the transmission grid. This experience and the technologies developed are key areas for collaboration, particularly as digitalization becomes increasingly important for enhancing transmission capacity without new infrastructure.

She further stressed the importance of cooperation in the maintenance and operation of electricity grids. Beyond construction, maintaining these grids in proper technical condition is crucial, and Germany possesses extensive expertise in this field. Haverkamp advocated for stronger cooperation in capacity development and training, highlighting the importance of experience exchange and involving young people in these processes.

Haverkamp also mentioned the German Energy Agency's experience with European connectivity regulations, emphasizing the significance of understanding grid codes for exporting electricity to the European Union, with Bulgaria and Hungary as the final destinations of the Green Energy Corridor. She expressed interest in supporting such projects, noting Germany's status as a net importer of electricity and its goal to achieve climate neutrality.
