Muscat:World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October each year and is recognized by the United Nations as an occasion to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the theme for World Habitat Day 2026 is 'Adequate Housing for All.' The theme highlights the need for policies, partnerships, and practical solutions to transform the right to adequate housing into a reality. The initiative emphasizes inclusive approaches for lower-income households, people experiencing homelessness, communities affected by crises and disasters, and those at risk of displacement.
The observance also calls for secure land tenure, well-planned and serviced neighborhoods, and a variety of housing options, including social, public, rental, cooperative, community-led, and market-based models. Additionally, housing solutions should be environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient, and culturally appropriate.
The Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2026 will occur in Muscat, Oman, from October 5 to 8, 2026. This event marks the beginning of Urban October and coincides with the Home and Building Expo. It will provide a platform for governments, communities, and stakeholders to exchange experiences, showcase innovative approaches, and strengthen partnerships to support adequate housing for all.
The observance will also promote dialogue on integrated housing strategies, effective multilevel governance, enabling policies and legislation, reliable data, and adequate financing, aiming to translate commitments into meaningful improvements in people's lives.
