Amphipolis: Greece's Ministry of Culture has announced significant progress in the restoration and enhancement of the Kasta Tumulus in Amphipolis, with a project budget exceeding 10 million euros.

According to Trend News Agency, the initiative is co-funded by both the Regional Operational Program of Central Macedonia (ESPA 2021-2027) and national resources from the Ministry of Culture.

The comprehensive project includes the development of visitor pathways, reception and service facilities, and the construction of a museum and exhibition hall. All necessary studies-architectural, structural, electromechanical, museological, and museographic-have been completed, allowing work to proceed under the supervision of the Ministry's restoration and museum directorates, alongside the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres.

A concurrent effort is underway to stabilize the peribolos, or marble enclosure, of the burial monument. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni highlighted the historical and archaeological significance of the Kasta Tumulus, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to ensure its protection and accessibility. The accompanying exhibition hall is designed to enhance the visitor experience while regulating access due to the limited capacity of the interior space.

Visitor infrastructure will include accessible routes for all individuals, viewing platforms, parking areas, and an exhibition hall showcasing key artifacts, such as the marble door of the tomb chamber and fragments of the caryatids. The exhibition will be divided into three sections: archaeological finds, digital interaction with the monument, and an open gallery providing direct views of the tumulus and its original marble enclosure.

The new museum building is designed with bioclimatic principles and will be largely subterranean, integrating with the natural landscape to minimize environmental impact. The project aims to protect and highlight the monument while boosting cultural tourism in Amphipolis and the surrounding region.

Minister Mendoni also expressed gratitude to former Regional Governor and current EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Regional Governor Athina Aidona, and the Regional Authority of Central Macedonia for their ongoing support and cooperation.
