Baku: We expect the provision in Armenia's Constitution that contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Trkiye to be removed, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmat Hajiyev, told Haber Global.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Hikmat Hajiyev stated that a process to adopt a new Constitution will begin in Armenia soon. These are the signals Azerbaijan has received in this regard. A referendum may be held. Once the territorial claims against Azerbaijan are removed from the preamble of Armenia's Constitution, Azerbaijan sees no obstacle to signing the final peace agreement.

The Presidential Assistant noted that, nevertheless, there is de facto peace in the region. Armenia's Declaration of Independence contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. The Declaration of Independence includes a provision on the necessity of unifying the former Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. Azerbaijan objects to this and has made constitutional amendments in Armenia a condition for signing a peace agreement.
