Baku: Azerbaijan is successfully preserving its historical traditions while embracing modernization in urban development, according to Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration. Hajiyev spoke to journalists about the country's efforts to maintain its rich urban planning culture, as highlighted by President Ilham Aliyev during the opening ceremony of the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13).

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Hajiyev emphasized the deep-rooted history of city-building in Azerbaijan, which dates back to pre-Christian eras. He cited the city of Gabala, the ancient capital of Albania, along with Nakhchivan and other medieval cities, as examples of the nation's historical urban planning traditions. These longstanding traditions serve as a foundation for the development of modern cities in Azerbaijan today.

Hajiyev also pointed out that Azerbaijan is recognized worldwide for its ability to integrate historical preservation with modern urban development. He noted that the capital city, Baku, exemplifies this balance and is home to several historical sites that have been included in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
