A hunger strike is expanding in support of opposition politician Tofig Yagublu, who has refused to eat food since January 5 in protest against his unjustified arrest and violation of rights in the detention center.
On January 8, in solidarity with T. Yagublu, a hunger strike was announced an employee of the organizational department of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Seymur Ahmedsoy and another activist of this opposition organization Elnur Guliyev.
On January 8, they came to Yagublu’s house and announced that they were joining the hunger strike, May Yagublu, the politician’s wife, told Turan.
“We have received reports of a large number of people wishing to join the hunger strike. They intend to hold a hunger strike at the headquarters of the Musavat party. There are also people in the country’s regions who want to join the hunger strike,” M. Yagublu noted.
According to PFPA leader Ali Karimli, the champions of freedom in Azerbaijan will not remain indifferent to the “destruction of Tofig Yagublu.”
“The protest movement will expand and the whole country will demand freedom for Tofig Yagublu. Ilham Aliyev must know that he is personally responsible for the life of Tofig Yagublu,” Karimli wrote on his Facebook page.
On January 8, lawyer Nemat Karimli visited Yagublu at the Binagadi detention center for persons arrested under administrative procedure.
“Tofig Yagublu continues his hunger strike. He was in a very weak state. Nevertheless, Yagublu said that he would continue his fight,” the lawyer told Turan.
Recall that a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces and the Musavat party, Tofig Yagublu, was detained on December 23 at a protest rally in the center of Baku demanding the release of public activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev.
On the same day, the Sabail court arrested him for 30 days on charges of petty hooliganism and insubordination to the police. On January 5, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld this decision. In protest, Yagublu went on a hunger strike. On January 7, the wife of the politician, Maya Yagublu, also joined the hunger strike
