Baku: Ignazio Cassis, the Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, emphasized Azerbaijan's significant contribution to European energy security during an exclusive interview with the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC). Cassis highlighted the growing importance of Azerbaijan as a reliable energy partner for Europe, particularly in the context of diversifying energy sources and supply routes to enhance security and resilience.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Cassis underscored that Azerbaijan's role in the South Caucasus positions it as a crucial link between Europe and Asia. He noted that the country's strategic efforts to reduce dependence on a single energy supplier have supported a stable and diversified energy supply for Europe. Cassis also commended Azerbaijan's constructive role and its commitment to reliable energy cooperation with Europe.
Cassis further elaborated on the strong diplomatic ties between Switzerland and Azerbaijan, which will celebrate their 35th anniversary next year. He described Swiss-Azerbaijani relations as solid and dynamic, built on regular political dialogue and high-level exchanges. The progress towards peace with Armenia, Cassis mentioned, creates new opportunities for regional stability, connectivity, and economic cooperation.
The Federal Councillor highlighted the significance of the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, established in 2003, in enhancing bilateral trade and investment. He noted the upcoming 10th session in Switzerland as a valuable opportunity to deepen cooperation and develop new partnerships, particularly in sectors beyond oil and gas.
Cassis expressed optimism about the operations of Swiss companies in Azerbaijan, particularly in the liberated Garabagh and East Zangezur regions, citing their potential to bring valuable expertise and innovation. Additionally, he emphasized Switzerland's interest in the development of the Middle Corridor passing through Azerbaijan, recognizing its strategic importance as a logistics hub connecting East and West.
Addressing the reconciliation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Cassis welcomed the progress made towards peace and the political will shown by both sides. He reiterated Switzerland's commitment to dialogue and confidence-building, expressing readiness to support further steps towards normalization. Cassis also looked forward to the OSCE Ministerial Council in Lugano, where he hopes to strengthen dialogue and rebuild trust between the two countries.
