Baku: Iliana Iotova, Vice President of Bulgaria, has emphasized the strong bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, which have reached the level of strategic partnership. Speaking at the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) held in Baku, Iotova acknowledged the significance of the forum amidst global challenges and expressed her honor in representing Bulgaria at the event.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Iotova praised Azerbaijan for successfully organizing the large-scale forum under the United Nations' auspices, which convened numerous heads of state and government. The forum served as a platform for exchanging ideas and best practices to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. Iotova highlighted the importance of creating cities that foster inclusivity, stability, and trust in political systems, and underscored that technological advancements should benefit humanity and reduce inequality.
Iotova further noted the excellent diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, commemorating the 34th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The strategic partnership was solidified with the 'Joint Declaration on Strengthening the Strategic Partnership' in 2024, signed by Presidents Rumen Radev and Ilham Aliyev. She acknowledged the productive discussions with President Aliyev, focusing on energy cooperation, diversification, and connectivity between Europe and Asia.
The Bulgarian Vice President emphasized the untapped potential in economic cooperation between the two countries. During her visit to Baku, she observed the lubricants processing plant in the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park, a significant Bulgarian investment. The project, which processes engine and industrial oils, was declared strategic and aligns with high-tech requirements as per COP29 decisions. Iotova also highlighted Bulgaria's expertise in high technologies and the potential for joint projects, citing the INSAIT institute as a leading center for computer science and artificial intelligence in Eastern Europe.
Iotova expressed enthusiasm for the educational and cultural ties between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, highlighting the significance of language and cultural exchanges. She acknowledged Baku's role in restoring the Trapezitsa Fortress Architectural Museum Complex in Veliko Tarnovo and anticipated the opening of the Shusha Park as part of the bilateral cooperation.
Energy cooperation remains a focal point in Azerbaijan-Bulgaria relations. Discussions with President Aliyev covered increasing Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe via Bulgaria, emphasizing Bulgaria's role as a strategic transit country. The 'Solidarity Ring' project, aimed at doubling Azerbaijan's gas exports to the EU, and green energy projects along the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe corridor were highlighted as key initiatives. Iotova also acknowledged SOCAR's involvement in Bulgaria's gasification projects.
Looking ahead, Iotova expressed optimism for high-level mutual visits, extending an invitation to President Aliyev to visit Bulgaria and anticipating the visit of Bulgaria's new Prime Minister Rumen Radev to Baku.
