Baku: The number of national teams participating in future World Cup tournaments could increase to 64, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested. In a recent statement to the Blue Sport portal, Infantino indicated that the governing body of world football is considering another expansion of the tournament format.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Infantino emphasized that the quest to participate in the World Cup should be accessible to all national teams worldwide, not just a select few countries. He noted that the 2026 World Cup will already see an increase from 32 to 48 teams for the first time. The FIFA President mentioned that discussions about expanding to a 64-team format are underway, although no final decision has been made yet.
